Why “Balance” is a Lie (+ What Works Instead)
We’ve all heard it: “You just need to find balance.” As if life is a perfectly measured equation where work, family, self-care, friendships, and everything else neatly fit into place. But let’s be honest—does that ever actually happen?
The truth? Balance is a lie.
Trying to give 100% to everything, all the time, isn’t just impossible…it’s exhausting. Yet, we constantly hold ourselves to an unrealistic standard, feeling guilty when we can’t keep up.
So what actually works? Rhythms. Priorities. Letting go.
Why Balance Doesn’t Work
Balance implies that everything should receive equal attention at all times, but life doesn’t operate that way. Some seasons demand more from us in certain areas, while others allow space to shift our focus. Instead of striving for balance, we should be tuning into what actually needs our energy right now.
Some seasons, you’re in deep with your career. Other times, motherhood takes more of your energy. Sometimes, you’re finally prioritizing yourself (and that’s not selfish). Real wellness isn’t about doing it all… it’s about knowing when to shift. That is the million dollar question; how do you know when it’s time to shift?
How to Know When It’s Time to Shift Priorities
If you’re feeling stretched thin or uncertain about where to focus, ask yourself:
Reflection Questions:
- Where is most of my energy going right now? Is that intentional or by default?
- What’s feeling heavy, draining, or overwhelming? What’s feeling fulfilling?
- If I could give myself permission to focus on one thing for the next month, what would it be?
- Is there something I’ve been neglecting that I deeply miss?
- What would shifting priorities actually look like for me… not ideally, but realistically?
Practical Tips for Shifting with Ease
Check in weekly : Take five minutes to reflect: Does my energy match my current focus?
Let go of the guilt : Priorities shifting isn’t failure; it’s how life works.
Make micro-adjustments : You don’t have to overhaul your life. Tiny shifts (even 10 minutes of “me time”) can create big changes.
Name your right now focus : Choose one area to lean into this month and honor that choice.
Trust that everything has a season : Just because something isn’t your top priority today doesn’t mean it never will be.
