Building Courage To Do Something That Scares You

Do you remember the last time you felt paralyzed by fear? That overwhelming sensation that holds you back from pursuing your dreams, trying something new, or standing up for yourself? As Nelson Mandela famously said, “Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.” Welcome to my corner of the internet where we explore the possibilities when we build courage and face things that scare us.

Understanding Fear

What is Fear?

Fear is a natural and universal emotion that everyone experiences. It can manifest both physically and mentally, often triggering a fight-or-flight response. While fear can protect us from danger, it can also limit our potential when we perceive something as a threat rather than it just being unfamiliar.

How to Build Courage: Acknowledge Your Fear

Self-Reflection

The first step in overcoming fear is to acknowledge its presence. Allow yourself to feel it without judgment. Understand that fear is a part of being human. Take a moment to write down your fears. What exactly are you afraid of? How does it make you feel? An important part is not holding onto these fears too tightly, we aren’t embodying these fears or the emotions that accompany them, we are simply acknowledging that they are there.

Take It One Day At A Time: Break It Down

Set Small Goals

Divide your fear into smaller, manageable steps. What will it take to overcome this fear? Achieving these mini-goals can build your confidence and momentum. Below your list of fears, write out the steps it will take to overcome your fear. Start with the step that feels the most manageable and work your way up.

Celebrate Yourself

Celebration is a big deal when it comes to building up courage to take on something that scares you. As you work through each step, take time to honor your courage. It can be as small as taking a moment to say I am proud of you.

Find Your Team

Support is something that is often talked about but when we are afraid of something, we tend to crawl into our little personal bubble. I encourage you to find your team; these are people that are there to support you. People you trust to help encourage your along the way. This can be family, friends, and even professionals like a therapist or wellness instructor.

Building courage to face your fears is a journey, not a destination. By acknowledging your fears, breaking them down, building a support system, and practicing resilience, you can overcome what scares you and unlock your full potential.
